How Dry Ice Blasting Works

Three powerful mechanisms act simultaneously on impact — kinetic energy, thermal shock, and sublimation — to remove virtually any contaminant without water, chemicals, or abrasion.

Dry ice CO2 pellets sublimating — the raw material of dry ice blasting
Solid CO₂ pellets — the engine of the process
01
Step 01

Kinetic Energy

Dry ice pellets are accelerated to supersonic speeds by compressed air, striking the surface with tremendous kinetic force that breaks the adhesive bond between contaminant and substrate.

02
Step 02

Thermal Shock

The extreme cold of the dry ice (-109°F) causes rapid thermal shock at the point of contact, making the contaminant brittle and easy to remove — while leaving the substrate unharmed.

03
Step 03

Sublimation

On impact, the dry ice instantly converts from solid to gas, expanding 700x in volume. This micro-explosion lifts contaminants away from the surface with no moisture or residue left behind.

The Science Behind It

At the microscopic level, dry ice blasting is a multi-physics event. Three forces — kinetic impact, thermal shock embrittlement, and CO₂ sublimation expansion — combine in milliseconds to lift and flush contaminants off any substrate without abrasion or moisture.
